Power Transformer and Distribution Transformer

Power Transformer and Distribution Transformer

Purpose of Transformers is to change AC voltage levels without change in frequency, such transformers being termed as step-up or step-down type to increase or decrease voltage level, respectively. The major components of a transformer mainly include the bobbin, core, windings, and insulation agents

Power transformer is used in power transmission network of high voltage for either step up or step down purpose. In general , they are rated in terms of MVA and work for high voltage i.e. 33KV, 66KV, 110KV and above.

Distribution transformer are used for distribution network of end users and hence it works with low voltage i.e. 230V, 440V, 3.3 KV, 6.6 KV, 11 KV. In general their ratings are 500KVA, 1000 KVA etc.

Major differences of both are tabulated below:-

New generation transformers are coming with :

  1. Online partial discharge monitoring system.
  2. Nitrogen Injection fire protection system.
